3/22/13 > CURRICULUM INFORMATIONAL MEETING

Hello, this is John Valastro, Superintendent of Lumberton ISD and I would like to invite you to a Curriculum Informational meeting to be held on Monday, March 25, 2013 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Lumberton Intermediate School. The meeting will be held in the school commons. We look forward to sharing information regarding the curriculum program for Lumberton Independent School District. Thank you.

2/27/13 > District Response

In response to media interpretation of Lumberton Independent School District administration and staff, the school district would like to emphasize the profile of the school. The students within our school district are taught to learn to think for themselves. Our goal is to educate students to be aware of this global society and the accolades and dangers that exist; as well as, excelling in the adopted curriculum. The school district is continuously evaluating the curriculum to make sure we stay abreast of best practices and to use the most efficient and effective methods to teach our students. The school district is one of a few school districts in this area that has achieved meeting Adequate Yearly Progress through federal accountability, as well as a Recognized School District in the State of Texas.

In reference to "freedom fighters," the teacher used the quote in her classroom from Gerald Seymour in his 1975 book Harry's Game which stated "one man's terrorist is another's freedom fighter." The point of this quote was to create conversation to show how one group can perceive an action according to their own agenda. Discussion among the students focused on how people can twist the word "freedom fighter" and make it convenient for their own dark purposes. The teacher was emphasizing terrorists called themselves "freedom fighters." The misinterpretation of the fact the teacher called the 9-11 terrorists "freedom fighters" is far from accurate.

Every school year, the district supports Patriots' Day and honors those who were subjected to the hateful act of terrorism that was brought upon this country; the district supports the United States' efforts in combating terrorism.

In Lumberton, the school district has offered a Christian Bible Study class that was available to all students, as well as allow student led Christian Organizations called "Raiders for Christ;" "God's Team;" and "Kids for Christ."

2/25/13 > Lumberton ISD Response to CSCOPE & Promotion of Islam

Lumberton ISD Response to CSCOPE and Promotion of Islam

Recently a picture had surfaced showing five students dressed in burqas (Islamic attire) in a World Geography classroom at Lumberton High School. The lesson that was offered was not a written CSCOPE lesson; however it informed students to the customary culture of the people in the Middle East. The lesson that occurred was presented on February 1, 2013. As part of the curriculum from the World Geography TEKS (as prescribed by the state of Texas), the students are to study the culture (TEKS number 17):

"Culture. The student understands the distribution, patterns, and characteristics of different cultures." The student is expected to:

(A)  describe and compare patterns of culture such as language, religion, land use, education, and customs that make specific regions of the world distinctive;

(B)  describe major world religions, including animism, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism, and their spatial distribution;

(C)  compare economic, political, or social opportunities in different cultures for women, ethnic and religious minorities, and other underrepresented populations; and

(D)  evaluate the experiences and contributions of diverse groups to multicultural societies."

The lesson that was offered focused on exposing students to world cultures, religions, customs, and belief systems. A description on the whiteboard behind the students show the splits in religions: Islam (Sunni and Shia), Judaism (Reform, Conservatives, and Orthodox), and Christianity (Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant). Clothing expresses the individual culture. The lesson is not teaching a specific religion, and the students volunteered to wear the clothing.

The portrait focused only on Middle Eastern attire and the students are wearing variations of this customary attire found in the Middle Eastern culture. This portrait does not reflect the entire aspect of the lesson. The lesson encompassed diversity education so students receive a firm understanding of our world and why people are motivated differently.

Lumberton ISD has purchased the CSCOPE curriculum however; the teachers are not required to teach the lessons that are provided. The school district follows the Year at a Glance, a scope and sequence of the adopted Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, as well as the Instructional Focus Document which explains the Rationale, Common Misconceptions for students, TEKS, and the Key Academic Vocabulary that supports conceptual development. The district has great teachers and supports the teachers and their individuality in methods of instructional delivery.

1/22/13 > Middle School Students Enjoy Ice Cream Sundaes

Lumberton ISD Middle School students enjoy ice cream sundaes!

In an effort to lower the number of zero homework grades for middle students, Lumberton Middle School came up with an incentive plan to encourage all students to show responsibility and get their homework done. Students were rewarded each 3 weeks for having no zeroes on their homework assignments and a reward was given for having no zeroes the entire marking period. Students got to enjoy ice cream sundaes for their big incentive. More incentives will be given to encourage this positive behavior at Lumberton Middle School.

12/17/12 > Response to CT. Tragedy

Dear Parents and Faculty:
This is John Valastro Superintendent of LISD. In response to the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut I want to communicate the efforts of our faculty and staff to assure the community that action is being taken to maintain a safe and secure environment for all.

As a school district we must continue to believe that policies and procedures we have in place, while not foolproof and perfect, allow us to best prepare for such a horrible event. We cannot always prevent the actions of someone who is determined to inflict harm on innocent children and adults. However we can prepare for incidents, be it weather-related, fire, or intruder.

  At the school district level we will continue to:

· Review our current practices for "safe and secure" schools routinely, and adopt policies proven to be effective in reducing risk;

· Provide the utmost in training to all employees on security issues, including frequent updates;

· Work with our local Police and Fire Departments to coordinate prevention and response activities;

· Move toward completion of our campus safety and security audits throughout the District;

· Do all of these things as routine protocol rather than in response to tragedies in other locations.

We will also continue to recruit, hire, and train the kind of professional and support people who always place students first and who would react - should the unthinkable occur - with the same bravery and valor in protecting our children that our fellow educators in Newtown exhibited.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families of those affected by these recent events.

Parents who have questions about security procedures should contact the campus principal.

11/17/11 > Patriotism in our Schools

Lumberton Intermediate students have been busy gathering items to help our men in women in uniform celebrate the holidays. The 4th grade social studies classes at the school have made it their goal to achieve the TEK objective of learning patriotism by sending packages filled with a variety of items to our soldiers. Students and parents have sent in toiletries, canned goods, snacks, medicine, and a range of various other things needed by our military. The children have identified with our soldiers by placing their names and addresses on the school wall to mark when their packages were full and ready to be shipped. The donations poured in from our community not only from our students but also from CVS, Wal-Mart, Sonic, Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, Meineke, Buffalo Wild Wings, and our wonderful Lumberton Intermediate parents. Mrs. Sanders and Mrs. Pedigo helped mastermind the distribution of the items by utilizing our parent volunteers and packaging them with great care. Our soldiers will also receive an extra bonus of New Year's party foods with the shipment. This project has made a lasting impression with the LISD students and could not have been done without the efforts of many people in our community.

9/27/11 > Food Guidelines for Students

The Texas Department of Agriculture 2004 Guidelines:
The Texas Department of Agriculture, which oversees school district child nutrition programs in Texas, have in place that guidelines only permit parent and guardians to bring an outside meal for their child. This ruling prohibits other family members from bringing outside food for students. Please refer to the LISD Child Nutrition Department web site.  With your help, we will be able to comply with the policy of the Texas Department of Agriculture and prevent monetary penalties.

9/23/11 > Lumberton High School Student Robert Tutton

  On September 11, 2011, Lumberton High School student Robert Tutton participated in climbing the 56-story Renaissance Tower in Dallas along with 343 firefighters in full gear; each one representing a firefighter that died on 911. Robert wore a lanyard with an ID tag containing the photo, name and unit of firefighter Scott Larsen of Ladder 15 who died on 911 in one of the Twin Towers. Before each firefighter entered the stairwell, a folded flag was passed from one firefighter to the next. The flag passing through Robert's hands created a very stoic memory. Robert described the stairwell scene as solemn, but very loud with equipment making roaring, whooping sounds. Serving as a volunteer firefighter for Lumberton Fire Department, Robert is planning to go to school for EMT, Firefighter and Paramedic.

2/22/11 > Congratulations High School Cheerleaders

The High School Cheerleaders traveled the weekend of February 12th to Orlando, Florida to compete in the National High School Cheerleading Competition.  This competition is the national competition for school cheerleading and is broadcast every year on ESPN.

The competition team is made of 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th graders. The team competed in Large Varsity Division 2; there were 30 teams in the division from 25 different states from across the country.

They started the first round in preliminaries on Saturday.  Unfortunately, about 1/3 of the way through the routine, one of the team members was injured while tumbling. She was unable to continue but judges did allow them to repeat the routine.  At that time, the crowd, consisting of Lumberton fans as well as other teams and their fans, could not have been more supportive and continued chanting and cheering for our girls!

The team was given approximately ten minutes on the warm-up mat to replace the injured girl with an alternate.  The entire competition staff working the warm-up area gathered around our girls and watched as the team quickly made the needed adjustments.  The staff was amazed at how well our team worked together and at the talent these girls possess.

When the Lumberton team was announced once again, they were greeted by an incredibly supportive crowd.  Not only did the team perform the routine, they were chosen to be one of only two teams in our group to advance straight to finals!  Lumberton teams have advanced to finals in the past, but never before have they been chosen to advance to finals without competing in the semi-finals.

The High School Cheerleaders performed a nearly perfect routine on the final day and placed 8th in the nation.  They are the highest ranking team in the large division in the state of Texas.

Haley Bowman, Soprano 1 and Lumberton High School junior, successfully auditioned for membership in the Texas Music Educators' Association's (TMEA) All-State Women's Choir on Saturday, Jan. 8 at Deer Park High School. SchoolCenter Picture
Haley competed against 160 students from East Texas and the greater Houston area and was one of 40 students selected. The audition process began in the fall, with over 55,000 students entering the All-State competitive process statewide, with five hundred are selected to perform with All-State Choirs.

High school students selected to perform in the All-State Concerts have competed through several levels of auditions beginning in the fall of 2010 to arrive at the State level. TMEA All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive.

This competitive process begins throughout the state in auditions hosted by 28 TMEA Regions. Almost 1,000 students began the process in our region, and then were eliminated through auditions down to 5 per voice part. Individual musicians perform selected music for a panel of judges who rank each singer. From this ranking, a select group of musicians advances from their Region to compete against musicians from other areas in seven TMEA Area competitions.

All-State performances are held as part of the annual TMEA Clinic/Convention, Feb. 9-12, 2011, in San Antonio. Over 22,000 people from Texas and beyond will attend over 200 workshops, 60 concerts, and visit over 1,100 exhibit booths at the nation's largest music educators' convention.
